The color of Facebook.

Imagine, the color blue then think of the Internet and the Social Network. What are you thinking of? Facebook. Am I right?

imagesource: appadvice.com
We tend to recall on things that we are familiar with. Blue is the color of the design on the Facebook social network site and us bloggers are always on the Internet. However, because everyone has his or her own perception on color, the type of blue varies, as Albers states in his book ‘Interaction of Color’. Even though the color and logo is prominent in society, we don’t know exactly what blue it is. The designer knows the color number, but the commoners don’t.
Our human retina receives the 3 primary colors, blue, red, and yellow. These three primary colors constitute all color. With the Facebook logo being blue, the eye cannot be deceived. It is blue. This blue offers a commonality to receivers. MySpace, an earlier social network site was blue. Facebook used this idea, and incorporated to their color design. The simplicity of the color used allows receivers not to be overwhelmed with the blue logo. When the screen is lit, you still want to stare at it, compared to an orange sign when it’s lit up you tend to squint or look the other way.
It takes a long process to determine the color of a logo, emblem, or design. Everything goes back to Zeitgeist, which is the spirit of the times. Color popularity changes season to season. As we get older, we see the world differently. Color may help designs out because it becomes extra visual aid for the eye, but Facebook creator, Mark Zuckerberg is colorblind. He cannot see the color of his logo, yet the logo is known throughout the world. Despite how color can transform a design, it might not matter too much; we did live in world of black and white.

“Can we pretend that airplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars? "

....I could really use a wish right now.
imagesouce: gtsaviation.com
Airplanes are utopia. It helps improve this society in many ways possible. It changed the game for transportation. You can travel from one location to the next in less time it would take to walk.
Because we humans live in a face-paced environment, we want to do things quick, easy, and efficient. And if we are in a rush and cannot waste time, we want what’s the best for us. Airplanes apply to every said above. Without it, we would not live in a utopian lifestyle. There would be less jobs for people because their would be no airports, businesses will suffer because they won’t be able to ship produces in a timely manner, and we would be impatient of each other and life, causing everyone to kill one another (maybe).
The design of an airplane strives to improve society because it can hold numerous amounts of passengers, weights, and baggage to those want to travel. Everyone would not have to take boats anymore to reach from continent to the next. It changed the course of time. It allows society to see the world in less time it would take those who lived in the Ice Age.
The design of airplanes also differs from other transportation that is currently produced. It has symmetrical wings, generating aerodynamics force lifting the object into the sky. Unlike cars, subways, buses, and bikes, airplanes fly in the sky. There is no traffic in the sky and pilots are able to fly more often because there is not much in the sky to compete with.
We could only wish to time travel every time we see a shooting star (or an airplane), but the closest thing to time traveling is flying on an airplane. It’s fast, efficient, and here to use. Society has taken advantage of it and has not stopped despite the pat downs in airport security. If it makes us happy, it stays.

I'll catch a grenade for you.

With Bruno Mars’s hit single “Grenade” out on the radio, I come to ponder “will someone really catch a grenade of their significant other?” I may not be the romantic, but I sure won’t. Then I pondered again, why were grenades invented? It hurts millions of people out there and kills thousands. It’s a dangerous designed object.
The grenade originated from the idea similar of a pomegranate. Besides the shape, if the fruit is overripe, it will explode. The grenade does the same thing. This object dates back to the Byzantine Empire and has been used in different countries and many wars. There are different outer shell designs of the grenade, but it the inside is designed similarly: the body, the filler, and the fuse. When the trigger is pulled, then the chemical is exposed and ready to detonate.
imagesource: grenadelauncher.com
Intended for military usage, grenades were hand held weapons easily thrown against the opponent. It is used during close combat wars for protective reasoning. There was countless of wars happening and everyone needed to defend him or herself, and grenades did the job. However, as grenades were being used in the Vietnam War, the newly design object did not explode. They did not work properly and they were left on the grounds in Southeast Asia for civilians to touch and blow up on them.
In military and survival defense, grenades are great objects to use to protect one’s country. The dangerousness of the grenade took away lives in the war and other non-deserving deaths. It was intended to great success, but it came with consequences. People should understand that grenades are used in life or death situations. There should be no fowl play because it can hurt someone. Society understands there are weapons that will hurt people, they just have to know when to use it and when not to. People may find it morally wrong, but there is no way of stopping the production of grenades. If people are willing to sing along to a song entitled, “Grenade”, think what else they might do.

You can stand under my umbrella. Eh Eh

Goodbye sun, hello rain! It's raining season in Davis, so grab your umbrella. (That is, if you own one). Umbrella vary from color, size, and sturdiness. Through Ergonomics research, inventors discuss 5 areas in order to produce a good quality product. Let's see if umbrellas pass the test.

Safety first. Safety is very important in all product making. We don't want to buy something that will harm us in any way. Umbrellas are safe. However, if you use it for other things, it's quite dangerous. Umbrellas have sharp tips that might poke you or others and metal springs that clip your finger if you close it wrong. The safety precaution should be of others, rather that of one self. Umbrellas will hurt people if used improperly. Open it away from others. You don't want to point them in the eye. Other than that, it's safe.

Comfort and ease of use is next. People will buy objects when it is comfortable to one's self and one's lifestyle. Because there is one way to use this object, we wouldn't think it is uncomfortable. However, if you are trying to juggle coffee, books, cell phones, and the umbrella itself, it's very uncomfortable. You are only left with one hand to do things or else you will get soaked by the rain water. Then you will be uncomfortable using the object. You hands will be cold and you are more likely to drop things. It's easy to open the umbrella. The standard umbrellas have one simple button you hold and then you extend the shaft. Two simple steps. However, the ease of using it may not be simple if you need to walk in the rain.

Performance and productivity may be the reason why umbrellas were invented. It serves one purpose, to protect one and cover from rain (sometimes sun). However, throughout the decades, the productivity level has been tweaked. You can use it as a cane, decoration, or props for dancing. But in the end, it is used to protect. Throughout cultural and countries, umbrellas have a universal meaning. The performance might fall short depending on what medium is used. When it is pouring rain, you will want to use an umbrella. Given. However, when there is rain and wind, the umbrella looses the battle. You are rarely protected from the rain and your back gets wet. The productivity value looses. Unless the umbrella is clear, you will not know where you are walking because you can trying to cover the front your face, which leaves the back open. It fails. Also, when it's windy, there is a high chance that your umbrella will prop open in an opposite direction which leaves you flying around to get it back to its normal shape before you get soaked. Again, if you loose the battle, you loose the umbrella. Money wasted.

Lastly, we have aesthetics. From long and thin to short and small, umbrellas posses all sizes. They don't discriminate. There is a size for everyone depending on how one likes their umbrellas. Some like it tall and thin to accommodate more than oneself. Others like small ones for one and easy to stow away. There is one to match everyone's lifestyle. Designs also vary from panda's to polka dots to logos and different colors. Depending on if you like accessorizing with umbrellas, then you should purchase one. However, if you don't. you should pay someone to hold it for you.

You should consider the 5 ergonomic elements when purchasing an object. You don't want to have objects that are obsolete. With the 5 ergonomics research techniques, umbrellas has passed the test in good ways but fails in others. But make sure it will effective in your lifestyle. If umbrellas aren't your style, there are always raincoats, hats, jackets, or  newspapers.

Or you can take advice from Rihanna.

Designing Dance

Since living in Davis, CA I have been exposed with hip hop dancing. Personally, I can't dance like a pro but I still try. Having friends who are in various of dance teams on campus, Sacramento, and the Bay Area, I have become fairly familiar with the dance life. I constantly watch live performances and live performances on Youtube.

I would like to share Choreo Cookie's piece of "The Climb" performed at 2009 Culutre Shock. You might not consider this as design, but choreography utilizes design elements. This piece offers symmetry, asymmetry, balance, one point perspective, ease of movement, comfort, aesthetics, and many more.

Throughout the dance, people are dancing in different levels. Some are higher than others, others and lower. Some aren't moving while others are moving around them. Some are mirroring each other which creates an illusion of symmetry. Other's are moving at different times which creates an illusion of asymtry. The two distinct features make the dance strong and offers different persepctive.

While the dance offer different perceptive, there is a one point perspective. Example is in the beginning, the boy and the girl. With the help of one point perspective as well as the multi perspective, it tells the story and that is the concept.

Without the concept behind the moves and ease of movement, the concept would not make sense. There needed to be layout and change as the choreography developed. Criticism and "playing" is helpful. The moves had to be safe and easy to do because if it was difficult, no one could produce the movements. Everything would look sloppy.

The overall Gestalt look alludes to the overall aesthetic look. The whole concept with different elements make the piece strong. Every dancer needed to invest their part to make the piece look "pretty". Every move was well thought out and if they were not on time with the moves, it would look messy. Different levelings made it performance strong and the emotion invested in each dancer was evident.

Word and Image with Jay-Z Brooklyn (Go Hard)

In the video "Brooklyn (Go Hard)" by Jay-Z feat. Santa Gold, typography is used to illustrate a video. The video form is all text based as words are interacting as the beat is being made to later form an image.

Word and image is used very precisely in this video going along with the beat, rhythm, and pattern. Each letter is presented as each beat it made, which strengthens the whole image. Gestalt principles are also presented as you watch the video. It starts off with single unities (letters) and as the song progress, it becomes whole (picture of Jay Z then later of Biggie). Each sum of the parts are combined to create a whole, which keeps watchers guessing, why are only letters being shown? It makes more sense once the video ends.

Rather than using actual people and actual objects, the words and images that are created offers a different optical feel. The optical feel allows one to think ahead and think outside the box. It follows the spelling of the word Brooklyn throughout the whole song. The choice of word Brooklyn creates an image that represents Brooklyn so well, Jay Z and Notorious BIG (Biggie). They both are inspiration for native Brooklyns now and then. Light sheds through this video paying homage to the ever popular rappers. No bling, no sex, no diamonds are needed for this video. Only words that sketches out iconic rappers.

This video does justice to paying respect for the once loved rapper and the reigning rapper himself, Jay Z. Words and image have never been so powerful joining together for society to use their optics and haptics. Listeners are able to pay close attention to the typography which keeps the video flowing. Without typography this video would be bland.

Word and Image

Advertising is a important in the marketing world today. Without stand out designs of advertising material like posters, videos, fliers, or logos, products will not sell. Consumers in today's society like visual over words. Image trumps the idea of reading. But one cannot stand-alone. The power of image and word is at its best together, especially in advertising.

Let's take this Durex ad for example, designed by Andrej Krahne. (Click Image for more pictures)The main image is two people having sex, however to create that image they used words to shape the bodies. The intense amounts of words were used precisely to describe the sensations all over the body. This idea and concept catches consumer's eyes quickly. We live in a place where sex sells. And so does this ad. The creative use with words and image helps make the ad more effective that it would be if the bodies were of actual humans.

Everything was put in place for a perspective. Especially the condom logo "Durex". They are selling their product. They are doing a great job using typography and graphics. The visuals are undeniably pleasing to the eye, despite that its two people having sex.

Walking Concept

T-Shirts: the walking concept. What you wear is who you are, especially if what you wear has images/words on it. No matter what form, a t-shirt, a sweater, a polo, a pair or jeans, there is always a concept or content behind the shirt and design. You are branded from the brand.

Some shirts have words printed on their shirts others have logos. The concept of printed tees is to be concise and to the point. The shirt can say so much. If you use your words correctly you can say a lot. People choose to shop where their heart desires. Some are brand whores, people who will wear brand-names because they are popular. Others are not.

Logos are important on clothing. They later become iconic depending on how popular and universal the brand is. Channel, YSL, American Eagle, Abrcrombie & Fitch, RocaWear, Nike, Ed Hardy and many more offer universal display. Everyone knows who the designer is. Their logo are always on their designs. Shirts people wear is advertising in itself. Without an word spoken, people will know how one lives, luxurious or not.

The idea of conciseness and simplicity to designing a logo is key to popularity and notoriety. One needs to understand the concept and understand why it was designed to be that way. The colors should be chosen to suit the buyer. The balance and rhythm should also be considered for eye gazing.

Objectified in Form and Content

The idea of form and content coincides in relation to design in the film Objectified by Gary Hustwit. The title offers explains a lot in regards to the film. Consumers experience these objects that are created. In turn it creates a process of mass production. It offers each other’s support going into a design process. Form is how an object is created and what medium was used to create it while content is the overall story of the object. Form leads to content.
Objects presented in the movie ranges from Apple products, toothpicks, and abstract chairs. The designers wanted to illustrate the different forms using various materials. Not all objects are the same. They don’t have the same use; they have different stories from different perspectives, which is known as content. But the content may or not be universal depending on the person and cross-cultural context.
With objects being mass-produced and in high demand, we tend to lose the focus behind the content. The materials stay the same (sometimes dumbing down for cost productions) but everyone has their interpretation of what they want to do with the object. The object may have ephemeral qualities or is long lasting through decades. However, it changes year by year generation by generation.
There are many products produced in the world. Some are functional some are not. We can make anything into something as long as there is a story behind it. The drive behind creating an object leads to discovery of new things. We as designers should focus on what we can offer to the world. We shouldn’t take anything for granted. We need to be aware of why something was invented. Be open-minded.

Iconic Styles

On Halloween weekend, I was deciding on what celebrities are easily to emulate. I stumbled upon this particular picture (Everygued.com) with iconic fashion styles musicians have incurred throughout the recent decades. Each design of each article of clothing was chosen specifically and put together to create a whole outfit, a Gestalt principle. It offers the same concept. The whole is better than the sums of its part. We like to visualize things as a whole/unity and stray away from a bi-stable outlook. An outfit cannot stand-alone without it’s counterparts. It won’t be an outfit. It will just be a single object or entity. The shirt, tie, jacket, shoe, undershirt equate to a whole, one complete ensemble outfit.

The salient characteristic allows consumers and audiences to distinguish what style is being portrayed. The characteristics of an outfit later become iconic because consumers and society will always remember the outfit. The most distinct one is the Michael Jackson outfit. It doesn’t take time to think what outfit that is from. Another stand out outfit is the suit that Kanye West wears with the heart. The simplicity of each style creates iconic memories that are placed in history. The outfits are concise and memorable. People will discuss the style amongst each other for years and years. With style and fashion always recycling itself, we can also see how certain styles are recreated and recycled.

You may not consider outfits as a design, but it can be. Form is used: the clothes. And content is used: the outfit. The pieces of fabric are mediums to designers. We can have interpretation of what each outfit means, but every generation and cultures will have their own perception. There is room for conversation with these outfits. These conversations have lasted over decades. The outfits are the evidence. We are still discussing it to date.

If you want to take a ride with me...

One object I find in particular fascinating in this industrial world is a bicycle. They are mass-produced in different countries with different form to fit everyone’s liking. Consumers are not all the same and everyone has their own preference. Bikes rule the city of Davis, Calif. It’s a biking community. Having different forms of bicycles with varieties in selection allows everyone to be happy with this popular object.
Bikes are proportional, balanced, and has shape. They need to be proportioned for effectiveness. The wheels need to be on opposite sides in order for the movement to flow. Everyone does not ride bikes; it is hard to achieve a balance. When one finds balance sitting on a bike and pedaling forward, it has achieved its purpose as an object. The purpose is universal to everyone around the world. Whether the shape is a tricycle, unicycle, road bike, cruiser, or bmx bike, they all serve the same function. However, everyone has his or her own content to provide. It means different things to their owners. It can either be for play, work, or movement. It’s up for interpretation.

Bicycles are massed produced but may not be as popular as your Ipod or MacBook. They can be both personalized to ones lifestyle, but they these technological advances are more obsolete than your bicycle.

Sony Bloggie

This past weekend, I did a promotion job for Sony. They were featuring various new products such as DJ Hero 2, new Sony VAIOs, and their touch screen PCs. But the focused product was their new compact video recorder, the Bloggie Touch

With the product itself, you would think you could record and upload instantly. Well, that’s false advertisement. Let’s not steer away from the product though. The specs are amazing against its’ competitor, the Flip. The Bloggie runs on either a 4gb (179.99) or 8gb (199.99). You might think that’s expensive. But it has HD quality running on 1080. That tops the Flip already having 1070. It has 12.8 megapixels built in, more than my DSLR. It’s compact and lightweight. It’s very simple to use with its touch screen capabilities and easy one record button that can record and take stills at the same time.
The design of the Bloggie is sleek. However it does fall short for today’s society. It wasn’t designed to upload on the spot. You have to go to a computer and upload it yourself. There are no 3g capabilities on the camera for one to instantly blog about it. We live in a society where we need things fast and right now. We don’t want to wait. We like things speedy. The Bloggie was just designed to beat its competitor. It did not think about other products on the market. Despite the lesser quality, my Blackberry can do me justice. I can snap a photo and upload to Facebook, Tumblr, or my email. It’s instant. We are instant. I would still recommend this product for people to buy. We like modern things and advancement in technology, which the Bloggie is. The quality is amazing and I wouldn’t mind bringing it to a music show, graduation, or even on a nice gaze outside. But if you are ready to share to the world in one moment, this wouldn’t be it.

Compare and Contrast

IPHONE VS BLACKBERRY.

What phone is better? What's is the right phone for you? This is everyone's question when they enter a phone store. Some like simple flip phones while others like the smartphone with different functions. Everyone has their preference.

The biggest feud in today's talk is IPHONE vs BLACKBERRY. What phone is better. Comparing the two, they have their pros and their cons.

The pros of an IPHONE:
1. it has 3G capability
2. it's touchscreen
3. there is facetime
4. there are many apps to download
5. it takes pictures/video

The cons of an IPHONE:
1. it's touchscreen
2. it's doesnt have a keyboard
3. everyone has it (you don't get service in some places)
4. its big
5. it's only for att

The pros of a BLACKBERRY
1. it has 3G capability
2. it has a keyboard
3. it has word/powerpoint/exeel programs
4. it easy for emails
5. the camera has flash/records/take pictures

The cons of a BLACKBERRY
1. you can't download a lot of apps
2. the trackball (if one) messes up
3. you cannot zoom into websites
4. can't open many windows
5. the screen is too small

Do you know what phone I own? If you chose Blackberry, you are correct! I own a Blackberry for various of reasons. Mainly because of all the cons an iPhone has. I buy things according to how I live. My Blackberry is my work phone. I do everything on it. It's efficient, it's sleek, and its workable. The keypad is amazing. I cannot live without a keypad. Yes, iPhone owners say you get used to it, but having a keyboard is more effective. You can type more words per second. I will challenge anyone. Also, an iPhone is too much like a handheld gaming system. I'm in college now, I would like something more professional, and that is a Blackberry. I won't say don't buy an iPhone, but choose a phone to your lifestyle. Don't buy it because everyone else does.

Design as Conversation

Design as Conversation. This can be verbal or non verbal. As long as there is intent for conversation making design as conversation. When there is talk, a universal understanding, or debate. Everyone wants to say something about it whether they like it or not.
An example that I feel is Design as a conversation is the film Inception. Inception was beautifully designed from the storyline, set design, to the idea of implanting a thought into someone else’s mind. But the most debatable part of the movie is the ending scene. Did the spin top (an emblem to differ reality or a dream) stop or not?
In my opinion in landed, meaning he came home to a reality. Others differ. The beauty of this scene fuels debate. Everyone wants to believe what he or she believes. The discussion repeats in cycles over and over again. People hear other’s reasoning, some accept it, some don’t. This is conversation that has been designed so well everyone is publicizing the movie and sparking buzz. Word of mouth is the best way of promoting such material. Designers are in heaven when their work gets known and is spreading like wildfire. Everyone likes to be talked about, whether it’s good or bad.
If design isn’t being talked about then why did one design in the first place? We can talk about anything and everything; and just about anything and everything was designed for a purpose in life. This blog is designed for you to think about it. It’s encrypted in your mind now. I’ve incepted it. Now it’s just your turn to believe it or not. Whether you do or don’t you’re still having a conversation about it.
To further this discussion, there are different explanations of the ending. I couldn't a clip of it, but there are reviews here. Hopefully this is not a spoiler alert.

Rollercoster!

HANDS UP!!

This past weekend I went on a retreat to Santa Cruz. We stopped by The Beach Boardwalk to enjoy the sights of the infamous Boardwalk. Walking down the boardwalk and seeing people waiting in line, it made me ponder, "who designed this amusement park?" It made me think, there had to be different design process, engineering process and safety process to make roller coasters for adrenaline junkies.

The design process must be vigorous. Kids waiting in line might not realize this. When they are in line, they are trusting the minds of the roller coaster engineers for the speed and adrenaline they are about to enjoy.  Designers must understand what the adrenaline junkie want. Is it speed, twists, loops, or drops? There are many variables to decide what a good roller coaster is. Also, what type of equipment they want, wood or metal? This adds to the feel when riding a roller coaster. Safety is also an issue, will seat belts be around the body or just the torso?

All these questions must be answered and well planned to assemble a fun and ridable roller coaster because if it isn't then death rates will go up. No one wants to fear death while riding a roller coaster. They want to know they are safe and are going to enjoy the ride for 45 seconds.

Creativity from Without!

Featured in the Billionaire Boys Blog Website, Julia Chiang fits the profile of a designer without. Julia utilizes of my favorite candy, ring pops. She takes the beauty of the shape, design, and color creating beautiful masterpieces. Julia uses her resources and designs from what are already available, what is given to her. She thinks outside of the box.

Who would have thought the little sticky candies with a hole for you finger could be used as wall art? No parents in their right mind would let their child stick a ring pop on the wall. But not Julia. She used what was around her and responded like a child in an adult manner.

Julia tastefully creates word exts on walls with sayings like "hugs + kisses", "sincerely yours", and "love always". She leaves the ring pops posted on the wall letting it melt, causing a drip effect on the wall. Julia exploits the beauty of colored ring pops allowing the colors and words to actually "pop" out of the wall.

As human specimens, we take advantage of ring pops. We only identify it as one thing, candy. We eat it. It's bad for our teeth and health. It's sticky and it leaves coloring in our mouth. We can design endless art with candy, we just need to get out of our comfort zone of ideas and play. We tend to think how society wants us to think. We should play with out food, only eat it. We shouldn't do what's out of the ordinary. But stirring away from the ordinary allows the creative juices to flow. As designers and people, we need to think like kids. Be a kid. Creativity starts young, we need to have the same mentality as we need 18 years ago.

Stone's Soup

On Tuesday, October 5, my Design 1 group went outside, gathered materials to create a "Stone Soup" project minus the soup. I believe this activity was and effort for each member to be creative in a collabortive effort. We all had to work together to create something, whether it be aesthetically pleasing or not. Everyone was able to voice their opinion in what they wanted and at the same time no one took complete power. We were very well manner and we tried to bounce off ideas from one another.

The hard part was the usage of material. We had poster paper, magazines, wires, water bottle cut outs, stuffing, paint, a dictionary, but we were stumped in what to make. The group wanted a cohesive idea and an idea that would make sense. Christine was wearing a shirt with an octopus on it. We were amazed by it and decided to make an octopus. After that spark, the ball kept rolling. Everyone jumped in and decided to work on tentacles, luckily we had eight members so everyone designed their own.

Everything started off great, until the shape of the octopus was not prominent. It started to look like a ball. Then we stopped and decided to work with what we had. We blew up some rubber gloves and made our very own baby octopus. Then we added a top hat to top it off. We also tore out pages from the dictionary with the words "create" and "design". This would be an interpretation of what audiences think create and design means.

Yes, maybe our stone soup might not have been very successful but with everyone's effort we all came together and were proud of what we made. Everyone's personality, mind, creativity, and efforts showed in this stone soup project. Maybe the purpose of this activity wasn't to make the best stone soup, it might have been more about how a team works together with one goal in mind. I think we succeeded. Next time, we should really make soup.

What time is it?

Nowadays, people do not own watches. We rely so much on our cellular phones as a timepiece. When we don't have access to our phones, we tend to look around for a clock or ask others, what time is it? Watches are underrated among today's generation. But we need to realize, watches were designed for you to help tell time quick and easy with no hassle. It's either connected to your wrist, neck or placed in different parts of a common area. We don't need to dig in our pocket or purse to retrieve the phone to then look at the time.

Watches serves many purpose to modern society. There are watches with calculator on it to do math. Watches have diamonds on them to accessorize with. Watches light up to guide one's way in the dark. They are waterproof for divers or swimmers to check out the time under water. There are compasses in watches to navigate direction. There are watches to monitor one's heart.

Watches are designed to tell time, however that has changed in one aspect, Fashion. People will wear it as an accessory and just wear a watch on a wrist. Some people might not be able to tell the time, know how to use it, or know that the battery is broken. Some watches are designed to be wearable for different outfits throughout the year. But we need to understand why it was designed. It was designed to help assist us on the time of day in order to work and living structurally. Without watches, we might not be able to farm, or to work, catch a movie, or go to sleep. The purpose of a watch varies, just know it's important for society. Buy one if you don't already have one.

The functionality of a watch is endless, that is why people where watches. . No matter where you are, it's always a good thing to have a watch accessible. You will always need the time when you're running late for class, work, a meeting. Time is essence. We need watches to keep us in sync with reality. We live in a society of constraints, everything revolves around time. It's good to have a watch or something that tells time in order to function and be in a society, especially in the United States of America.

Playing Cards

After a long and stressful week, I played spoons. The purpose of the game is to get a four of a kind with playing cards. I won various of rounds and the last round I won with all four Kings.

I never noticed cards before, but after listening about what design is, I found the cards very fascinating. I'm having fun playing with these 2x4 plastic paper with jacks, queens, kings, shapes, and numbers on it. But what is the real significances of these designs? How did society give each symbol a standard to follow by. The Jacks, Queens, Kings, and Aces are styled very old fashion similar to European rule. The Jack looks sad. The Queens do not look like queens, they are not attractive. The Kings look as if they cannot fight on their own. While the Aces have a goddess who is showing a lot of skin.

I find the designs/patterns these cards have in their outfits interesting. They are detailed and the colors are prominent. The red sticks out the most but the hint of blue and yellow calms down the playing card as a whole. Let’s not forget about the shapes used, clubs, diamonds, hearts, and spades. All these shapes have to have a meaning behind it. It gives rank. And when playing cards, everyone wants to win. They won’t be able to win unless they obtain the highest card in number and in shape. This is similar to modern society. You need to have the best (in yourself or in a team) to move on and succeed. This everyday pastime will help one manipulate and analyze moves that are coming and move that have come.

There are different designs of playing cards to cater to different audiences. If we are gambling with cards, why not have better designed ones?I would love the cards would reinvent itself to the current generation giving it a new zing. There is probably a long history of how the card originated and how it has evolved and why stop now? We should evolve it even more and recreate the design.

First Experience With Design

It's hard to pinpoint a date and time about my first memory of a physical object and its design mechanisms. The design become unnoticed because it because ingrained as an everyday object. We just use it and we do not focus on the design behind it.

When you are young, you do not notice objects. You have a one track mind. When I was a kid, candy was my world. I ate a lot and very often. One object that stuck out to me was the candy, KitKat. Growing up, my parents let me get candy every time we went grocery shopping. With the variety of candy to choose from, I always choose KitKats. It wasn't the candy that enticed me, it was the color and typeface of the wrapping. It was bright red with huge fonts, that stuck out to me. Not to mention, the candy was detachable to one another. It felt great breaking off a piece of the KitKat bar. The size was different from all the regular candy bars, it was squared rather than elongated. However, that was a con in some ways. I could never stick it into my jean pocket. It was too squared compared to a Snicker bar where it easily slips in. But,  this was different and I like different. To me, it was like a win win situation, I got yummy candy and I got a pretty wrapper.

Now, candy wrappers make a difference in my choosing. I like the aesthetics of the candy. I tend to favor what the color offers and if I will enjoy it or not. KitKats are still the same in color and sizes. It is a universal know candy brand and with its simplistic design it has become distinct. It is easy to spot in the candy isle when you're in a rush at the grocery store.
